9/8/2025: In August 2025, new federal regulations made it harder for many people to get the COVID-19 vaccine. Now, in many states, children ages 3–17, pregnant people, and adults under 65 without underlying health conditions must get a patient-specific prescription before receiving the vaccine. As a result, some Erie County residents have already faced delays and denials at pharmacies or difficulty getting prescriptions from their doctors.
To protect access, New York State took emergency action on September 5, 2025 to ensure that children, pregnant people, and healthy adults under 65 can still get the updated 2025–2026 COVID-19 vaccine at their local pharmacy — without needing a prescription or delay.
Pharmacists in New York are now authorized to prescribe and administer the vaccine directly, making it easier for all eligible New Yorkers to stay protected.
What does this mean for you?: Most people ages 3 and older will be able to get a COVID-19 vaccine at a pharmacy. Access may vary based on pharmacy policy, availability and insurance coverage.
If you have questions about getting the COVID-19 vaccine, talk to your local pharmacy or healthcare provider — they can give you the most up-to-date guidance.
The federal website Vaccines.gov, which previously helped people find COVID-19 vaccine locations, is currently not working.

Everyone ages 6 months and older should consider getting a flu vaccine for the 2025-2026 flu season. This includes people who have received a COVID-19 vaccine before and people who have had COVID-19. RSV (respiratory syncytial virus) vaccine is recommended for adults over 75 years, adults 50-74 years with underlying health conditions, pregnant people during 32-36 weeks of pregnancy, and some infants. People in those groups should talk to their doctor about RSV vaccine this fall.
