The Erie County Department of Health (ECDOH), in partnership with the Department of Public Works and the Office for People with Disabilities, has officially launched StreetSmart Erie County, a public health and safety campaign designed to reduce road-related injuries and fatalities.
This initiative is a call to action for all who use our roads including drivers, pedestrians, bicyclists, and scooter riders. From 2020 to 2023, Erie County experienced 210 fatal motor vehicle crashes and 46 pedestrian deaths. In the first half of 2025 alone, there were 118 crashes involving pedestrians, cyclists or skaters. These are preventable tragedies.
StreetSmart supports Erie County’s commitment to health, safety, equity and accessibility by promoting simple, but life-saving actions:
Drive SMART: Drivers should follow the speed limit and stay alert. Move over for emergency and construction vehicles.
Walk SMART: Pedestrians should respect walkways and use designated crossings. Look & listen; eliminate distractions like phones and loud music.
Ride SMART: Bicyclists and scooter riders should wear a helmet, be visible, and follow the rules.
This year-round campaign will promote various safety messaging for all road users including motorcyclists and public transit riders. Considerations for the safety of road workers and other groups will be highlighted in addition to seasonal safety risks.
We each have a role to play in making our communities safer, both at work and in our neighborhoods and county employees are encouraged to follow along and help spread the word by using #StreetSmartErie.
