Target Audience / Prerequisites

The course is designed for criminal justice personnel with all levels of photography experience.

  • Full-time, active duty NYS certified police officer or peace officer.
  • Civilian employees of law enforcement agencies may attend with written authorization from their department.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:  The Erie County Law Enforcement Training Academy (ECLETA), under the auspices of the Division of Criminal Justice Services, and in cooperation with the Amherst Police Department, will conduct the Basic Investigative Photography Course. This course teaches the skills necessary to effectively photograph a crime scene and the evidence contained therein utilizing classroom instruction and practical workshops. This course provides instruction in digital photography, students are required to bring and utilize the digital equipment utilized by their agency.  This course is a prerequisite for the Police Crime Scene Evidence Specialist Course.

REQUIRED ATTIRE & EQUIPMENT

  • EQUIPMENT
    • SLR/ Digital Camera with owner’s manual and memory cards (This camera MUST be Prosumer or Above Quality – No consumer Models)
    • External electronic flash (not built-in pop-up)
    • Macro lens or camera capable of taking close-up photographs
    • Variety of photographic scales (i.e., six-inch, angled scales)
    • Remote sync cord for flash; Zoom lens; Tripod; Adequate supply of batteries
    • Evidence markers
  • ATTIRE
    • Police Uniform or business casual attire; blue jeans, T-shirts & sneakers are NOT acceptable!

GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS:

  • 90% attendance (you may only miss 10% of the course FOR GOOD CAUSE)
  • Passing grade on written examination
  • Satisfactory completion of practical exercises

PLEASE NOTE:

  • YOU MUST RECEIVE TELEPHONE OR EMAIL CONFIRMATION FOR ENROLLMENT IN THIS COURSE!  Notice will be made approximately 2 weeks before the start of the course, DO NOT CONTACT THE ACADEMY OFFICE PRIOR TO THEN.
  • Course enrollment will be strictly limited to twenty (20) students NO EXCEPTIONS
  • Placement is NOT on a first-come, first-serve basis.
  • Agencies may be limited in enrollment to allow equal opportunity for this course.
  • Out-of-county students must submit an out-of-county residency form to the academy before the start of the course.  Failure to do so will result in non-admittance to the course.
  • Each student MUST have his/her own camera
  • Each student MUST complete and return the attached EQUIPMENT REVIEW FORM to the academy PRIOR TO the start of this course.
  • There will be a “night shoot” scheduled during the week and students will be required to work 2pm – 10pm.
