COURSE DESCRIPTION:  This course is designed to serve as a refresher for skills learned in the Basic Course for Police Officers and or Campus Public Safety Officer Course during the Emergency Vehicle Operator’s Course (E.V.O.C.) portion.  Emphasis will be placed on the safe operation of a Campus Public Safety vehicle and skills will be taught and reinforced to help reduce accidents and civil liability with regards to the operation of the Campus Public Safety vehicle.  The course will consist of classroom instruction and practical driving exercises.

INSTRUCTORS:  All instructors are Emergency Vehicle Operations Course (E.V.O.C.) Instructors, certified by the Municipal Police Training Council (MPTC), with several years of experience training police recruits at the Erie County Law Enforcement Training Academy (ECLETA).

TOPIC AREAS:  The importance of pre-shift vehicle inspections, the importance of seatbelt use, vehicle dynamics, the effects of mental attitude on driving, the dangers of distracted driving, driving in different weather types, braking & speed, and the effects on stopping distance and peripheral vision, special considerations when backing. 

PRACTICAL DRIVING EXERCISES:  Evasive steering, forward & reverse serpentine, right & left side road turns, U-turn, straight line braking, lane changes.

REQUIRED EQUIPMENT:  Students will need one Campus Public Safety patrol vehicle for every two (2) officers, three (3) students will require two vehicles and so on.

  • YOU MUST RECEIVE TELEPHONE OR EMAIL CONFIRMATION FOR ENROLLMENT IN THIS COURSE!  Notice will be made approximately 2 weeks prior to start of course, DO NOT CONTACT THE ACADEMY OFFICE PRIOR TO THEN
  • Course enrollment will be strictly limited to twenty (20) students, with the minimum being ten (10) students.  The academy may cancel this course if the minimum number of students is not met.
  • Placement is NOT on a first come, first serve basis.
  • Agencies may be limited in enrollment to allow equal opportunity to this course.
  • Students will be required to assist with setting up and taking down the driving course
  • Students will receive one credit from SUNY Erie Community College for this course

PLEASE OBSERVE THE POLICE ACADEMY DRESS CODE:

  • Police Uniform or business casual attire
  • Blue jeans, T-shirts & sneakers are NOT acceptable!
