SUBJECT: Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) Training Course I
The New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services is pleased to announce a training course in Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) I
Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) is based on the principle that proper design and effective use of buildings and public spaces in neighborhoods can lead to a reduction in fear and incidence of crime along with the improvement in the quality of life. CPTED’s goal is to prevent crime through designing physical environment that positively influences human behavior.
This three-day (24 hour) training event will cover the following topics:
- Basic CPTED theories and principles and applying such successfully.
- CPTED core principles and how they can positively influence human behavior.
- CPTED applications to specific criminal activity and “Hot Spot” locations.
- Applying low-cost crime reduction recommendations as they pertain to the CPTED core principles.
- How CPTED strengthens and assists with community relationships.
- CPTED and how such assists with the development and implementation of crime control strategies.
- Site Planning and how CPTED applies. (
- Attendees with complete several in depth CPTED workups and present them to the class.
This class will feature instructors from the City of Binghamton’s multi-disciplined CPTED team, led by Captain David R. Bidwell.
Note: Attendees should bring a laptop computer and the capability to take photographs. A cell phone camera will be sufficient.

Pre-Registration is required. All interested parties must register at least ten-days prior to the course as seats are limited. The location of training, class times and safety guidelines will be provided through an email confirmation; those who do not register will not receive this important notification and will not be admitted to the training. Walk-ins and transferring of confirmation notices will not be permitted.
