Domestic Violence Instructor Workshop - Erie County

The new Domestic Incident Response curriculum is required for all BCPO or Campus Public Safety Officer Courses that begin on or after January 1, 2026.The Municipal Police Training Council requires that instructors teaching this section must attend a Domestic Violence Instructor Workshop to familiarize themselves with the new section and its learning aids. Academy Directors are encouraged to ensure that the instructor(s) they plan to use are aware of this requirement.

The Instructor Workshop will focus on highlights from the nine lessons included in the curriculum:

  • Expanded Power and Control Wheel dynamics
  • The “Three-Pillar Response” to domestic violence calls
  • Introduction of the term “530.11 Relationships”
  • Proper trauma-informed interviewing techniques
  • DIR Completion
  • Lethality assessment
  • New York State Mandatory Arrest Law
  • Determination of primary physical aggressor
  • Connecting tactics of abuse with penal law offenses
  • Child-Sensitive Arrest Policy
  • Orders of Protection
  • ERPOs
  • Working with advocate providers

Additionally, instruction on interactive course activities will be provided:

  • Power and Control in practice
  • Decision Point exercises
  • Content review and priming exercises

*All Domestic Violence Instructors, both formerly certified and new, must attend one of these workshops to teach this new section. This workshop takes the place of any previous certification to teach the topic area. Future 2026 workshop dates will be announced.

Courses are scheduled to be held:

  • January 13: Westchester County
  • January 27: Monroe County
  • March 19: Steuben County
