Cost

There is NO cost to agencies located within Erie County. Agencies outside of Erie County should call for the exact cost.

Target Audience / Prerequisites

Students who want to enroll in this course must meet the following prerequisites:

  • Full- or part-time active duty as a NYS-certified police officer

  • Completion of the DWI Detection & SFST Course

  • Completion of a DCJS-approved Instructor Development Course

COURSE DESCRIPTION:  The Erie County Law Enforcement Training Academy, under the auspices of the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS), is offering the DWI Detection & SFST Instructor Course. This MPTC-approved and DCJS-certified course provides police officers with the necessary tools to effectively teach the DWI Detection and SFST Course. Instruction includes a review of the SFST curriculum, guidelines for planning and managing live alcohol workshops, and techniques for delivering engaging presentations.

  • Overview of Detection, Note Taking & Testimony
  • The 3 Phases of DWI Detection
  • Concepts & Principles of the Standard Field Sobriety Tests (SFSTs)
  • Processing the Arrested Subject, Report Writing & Preparation for Trial
  • Alcohol Workshop

  • YOU MUST RECEIVE TELEPHONE OR EMAIL CONFIRMATION FOR ENROLLMENT IN THIS COURSE!  A notice will be sent approximately 2 weeks before the course begins. Please do not contact the academy office with enrollment inquiries before then.
  • Course enrollment will be strictly limited to ten (10) students, NO EXCEPTIONS
  • Placement is NOT on a first-come, first-served basis, and priority will be given to full-time police agencies located within Erie County.
  • Agencies may be limited in enrollment to allow equal opportunity to this course.
