SUBJECT:   Law Enforcement Community Engagement Training

Community Engagement 101

Law enforcement’s role extends beyond responding to calls for service and conducting criminal investigations. Officers play a vital role in community engagement, fostering trust and strengthening relationships within the communities they serve. This training is designed to enhance the outreach and engagement efforts of law enforcement organizations by building on the fundamentals of community involvement. Students will learn various concepts and approaches to police-community engagement, exploring the benefits, diverse methods, and real-life examples of effective engagement strategies. By applying this knowledge, participants will be better equipped to support and advance their vision for stronger community partnerships.

This one-day (8 hours) training event will cover the following topics:

  • Creating a Culture of Community Engagement

To build community trust in local law enforcement and strengthen police legitimacy, it is essential for law enforcement organizations to adopt methods that foster an agency-wide culture of engagement. All staff members—sworn and non-sworn, from line-level personnel to executives—should align with the agency’s mission, working together to embed and sustain engagement throughout the organization. This training will equip students with the knowledge and strategies necessary to cultivate an organization-wide culture that promotes consistent, meaningful community engagement efforts.

  • Planning and Coordinating Community Events

Law enforcement agencies nationwide organize a variety of community events each year. Planning new events offers valuable opportunities to connect with underrepresented community groups and expand outreach efforts. This training will provide students with the essential knowledge and skills needed to effectively plan and coordinate community events, enhancing their confidence and capability in fostering community engagement.

  • Delivering Engaging Presentations

Delivering Engaging Presentations is designed to teach law enforcement personnel—from officers and deputies to chiefs and sheriffs—how to deliver impactful presentations that capture and hold an audience’s attention. This training will enhance students' communication skills, advancing their professionalism in interactions with the community and other stakeholders
