POLICE CRIME SCENE EVIDENCE SPECIALIST COURSE

8:30 AM – 4:30 PM

Description: The Erie County Law Enforcement Training Academy in cooperation with the Town of Amherst Police Department will present a two-week Police Crime Scene Evidence Specialist Course. This course is certified by the NYS Department of Criminal Justice Services and is recommended for those officers responsible for processing crime scenes.

Instruction will focus on crime scene management and processing and will include the following topics: crime scene documentation; rules of evidence; search and seizure; moot court; forensic laboratory services, controlled substances, crime scene sketching, practical application; latent fingerprints practical application; techniques of examining, collecting and preserving physical evidence; latest technologies available; and multiple mock crime scenes practical application. Successful completion of this course will require passing a final written cumulative examination.

The following is a list of supplies and equipment which you are required to bring to the class each day. 

Crime scene kit containing, at minimum, the following:

  • Clipboard
  • Sketch templates
  • Pencils/pens/sharpies
  • Tape measures (2) 100 foot each
  • Magnetic compass
  • Fingerprint Kit which includes dusting powder (black and/or dual use), brushes, gel tape, lifters and fingerprint cards
  • Flashlight
  • Carrying case for equipment
  • Evidence markers
  • Evidence Tamper Tape
  • Assorted Paper/Plastic Evidence Bags and coin envelopes
  • DNA boxes, swabs and water
  • Disposable gloves

Photography Equipment

  • SLR/Digital Camera with owner’s manual and memory card (this camera MUST be Prosumer or above quality – NO consumer models)
  • External electronic flash (not built-in pop-up)
  • Macro lens or camera capable of taking close-up photographs
  • Variety of photographic scales (i.e., six-inch, angled scale)
  • Remote sync cord for flash
  • Shutter release cable
  • Zoom lens
  • Tripod
  • Adequate supply of batteries

Prerequisites: Basic Investigative Photography Course 

The course enrollment will be limited to twenty (20) officers. Priority will be given to full time Erie County Police Agencies. Unless enrollment permits otherwise, agencies are limited to allow equal opportunity to attend this course.

Course Cost:   There is no course cost for Erie County Police Agencies. Other agencies should call to see if a fee applies.
