COURSE DESCRIPTION: The Erie County Law Enforcement Training Academy, under the auspices of the Division of Criminal Justice Services, will conduct the Police Field Training Officers Course. This course is designed to train Police Officers in the methods and reporting procedures utilized in the Supervised Field Training, Orientation and Review component of the Basic Course for Police Officers as well as for their agency’s FTO program. The goal is to transition the recruit officer from the academy setting to a patrol assignment. Upon completion, they will be prepared to train and evaluate new Police Officers, as well as prepare the appropriate written reports and officer evaluations. Field Training Officers will be required to have completed the Police Field Training Officers Course or equivalent to evaluate the recruit officer during the Supervised Field Training, Orientation & Review component of the BCPO, Phase 2, Police Refresher and Police Equivalency courses that commence after January 1, 2015.
COURSE TOPICS: History of the National Field Training Program, Key Elements of a Successful FTO Program, FTO Competency Evaluation & Documentation, Teaching Skills, Principles of Adult Learning, Role of the FTO, Override & Intervention and Remediation Techniques, FTO Liability Issues, Video Evaluations and a 10-miute teaching exercise.
COURSE COMPLETION REQUIREMENTS:
- Students will not be permitted to miss more than 10% of this course, for good cause.
- Students who know a conflict exists should arrange to take the course at a later date.
- A passing grade of 70% on a written exam and,
- Completion of a 10-minute teaching exercise.
- Students who successfully complete this course will receive DCJS certification as a Police Field Training Officer and college credits from SUNY Erie.

- Course enrollment will be strictly limited to twenty-four (24) students, agencies may be limited in enrollment to allow equal opportunity to attend this course.
- Placement is NOT on a first come, first serve basis, the submission of a registration form does not guarantee entrance to the course. Once the registration deadline has passed and selections are made, a confirmation email will be sent to the designated agency training officer, until that time please DO NOT contact the academy office with inquiries.
