SUBJECT:    Principled Policing In-Service Training for Probation, Parole and Corrections Personnel

                        Erie County (July 09, 2024)

Principled Policing – Focuses on the way probation, parole and corrections officers interact with the public and how these interactions influence crime rates and the public’s view of law enforcement and their willingness to obey the law. Evidence shows that practicing procedural justice can have a significant impact on compliance, cooperation, public safety, and officer safety.

During this 1-day training event, participants will learn the tenets of Principled Policing, gain a deeper understanding of the core concepts of legitimacy and how to build better relationships within the communities that they serve. All instructors have extensive experience in delivering this material.

This one-day (8 hour) training event will cover the following topics:

Procedural Justice I - Procedural Justice and Legitimacy in the Law Enforcement Profession

Studies on legitimacy in the law enforcement profession conducted in Western democracies have consistently shown that fair and equitable procedures in both treatment and decision-making during law enforcement –public encounters – in other words, encounters that utilize the principles of procedural justice - cultivate legitimacy. Legitimacy means that the public views law enforcement as legitimate, or entitled to exercise authority to maintain social order, manage conflicts, and solve problems in the community. That legitimacy enhances cooperation and increases compliance by those with whom law enforcement personnel interact with. That means less uses of force, which means less instances where the agency is exposed to liability and less injuries.

This training sessionwill focus on understanding the legitimacy of law enforcement personnel and procedural justice, the relationship between the community and these professionals and the rolehistory has playedin hindering legitimacy insome communities.

Training Objectives:

  • Define legitimacy and state how to increase law enforcement personnel's legitimacy.
  • Define procedural justice and discuss its benefits.
  • Review the relationship between the law enforcement community and the public.
  • Understand the role history has played in hindering legitimacy in some communities.
