Target Audience

This course is recommended for all sworn officers. This course is indicated for police officers who will be conducting in-service departmental training programs or lecturing at the Police Academy.  *SEE STUDENT REQUIREMENTS BELOW*

COURSE DESCRIPTION:  The Erie County Law Enforcement Training Academy, under the auspices of the Division of Criminal Justice Services, will conduct the Instructor Development Course.  This course will give officers the ability to research, prepare and communicate knowledge in the field of law enforcement. Lessons focus on determining training needs, writing instructional objectives, factors that influence adult learning, communication skills, the instructional process, and methods of evaluating course effectiveness. Students who successfully complete this course will receive DCJS certification as a General Topics Instructor as well as college credits from SUNY Erie. This important course is a prerequisite for other instructor level courses since it covers the basic instructional techniques.

PLEASE NOTE:

  • Course enrollment will be strictly limited to thirty (30) students, agencies may be limited in enrollment to allow equal opportunity to attend this course.
  • Placement is NOT on a first come, first serve basis, the submission of a registration form does not guarantee entrance to the course.  Once the registration deadline has passed and selections are made, a confirmation email will be sent to the designated agency training officer, until that time please DO NOT contact the academy office with inquiries.

REQUIRED ATTIRE AND/OR EQUIPMENT:

  • Attire
    • Department uniform of the day, OR
    • Shirt and tie for men, proper business attire for women
    • Blue jeans, T-shirts & sneakers are NOT acceptable! THIS IS NOT A CASUAL DRESS COURSE and students who report in violation of the dress code will be asked to leave.
  • Equipment
    • Flash drive (minimum 8GB is recommended)
    • One (1) ream of copy paper

STUDENT ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS:

  • Possess a high school diploma or its equivalent.
  • Be a police or peace officer at the time of certification and have completed the appropriate MPTC course.
  • If not a police or peace officer, be sponsored by their employing police or peace officer agency (written documentation is required).
  • Additional Recommendations:
    • Students should have significant experience as a police or peace officer, with very good performance evaluations.
    • Students should possess good communication skills.
    • Students should have above average moral character.
  • Please do not register for this course if the minimum requirements have not been met.

COURSE COMPLETION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Students will be required to give five presentations (1-minute, 2-minute, 5-minute, 10-minute, and 50-minute) and will also be required to pass two written quizzes with a minimum score of 70%.
    • Students who know a conflict exists should arrange to take the course at a later date.
  • Students who successfully complete this course will receive DCJS certification as a General Topics Instructor and college credits from SUNY Erie.
  • Students will not be permitted to miss more than 10% of this course, for good cause.
