Cost

There is NO cost associated with this class for Erie County agencies; out-of-county agencies should contact the academy office for the cost.

Target Audience / Prerequisites

  • Full-time, active duty NYS police or peace officer.
  • MPTC certified General Topics Instructor.
  • Completed physician's release form
  • Pass the PT agility test (Cooper Standards 70%) on November 6, 2026

COURSE DESCRIPTION:The Erie County Law Enforcement Training Academy (ECLETA), under the auspices of the NYS Division of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS), will be holding the Municipal Police Training Council (MPTC) approved Physical Fitness Instructor Course.This course prepares students to instruct topics related to physical fitness training at the police academy and/or at their own agency.

GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS:

  • 90% attendance policy (students can miss up to 10% of the course for good cause)
  • 70% passing score on a written examination
  • Passing scores on all practical physical fitness components (Cooper Standard 70th percentile for each component) *see attached chart for your sex/age passing marks*

  • YOU MUST ATTEND AND PASS THE PRE-TEST ON NOVEMBER 6, 2026
  • YOU MUST RECEIVE TELEPHONE OR EMAIL CONFIRMATION FOR ENROLLMENT IN THIS COURSE!Notice will be made approximately 2 weeks before the start of the course. DO NOT CONTACT THE ACADEMY OFFICE BEFORE THEN
  • Course enrollment will be strictly limited to twenty (20) students with NO EXCEPTIONS.
  • Placement is NOT on a first-come, first-served basis.
  • Agencies may be limited in enrollment to allow equal opportunity for this course. 
  • Out-of-county students must submit an out-of-county residency form before the start of the course; failure to do so will result in non-admission to the course.

REQUIRED ATTIRE & EQUIPMENT

  • Physical fitness training attire (including foul weather gear)
  • Water bottle

COOPER STANDARD TEST

Sit-up             Muscular endurance (core body) – The score indicated below is the number of bent-leg sit-ups performed in one minute.

Push-up:       Muscular endurance (upper body) – The score below is the maximum number of full body repetitions that the candidate must complete without breaks.
