Assistant County Attorney (General Counsel - Privacy Officer)
Typical Work Activities:
- Provide legal guidance to Erie County Department of Health.
- Act as Erie County’s HIPAA compliance officer with the assistance of private counsel.
- Review and approve contracts for the Department of Health.
- Assist the Department of Health implement enforcement related to the JUUL settlement.
Job Description:
The Erie County Department of Law (a/k/a the Erie County Attorney’s Office) is seeking an attorney with at least 6 years of experience to join the General Counsel team. The attorney will work almost exclusively with the Erie County Department of Health and all its divisions. The attorney will advise the Commissioner and staff on all legal matters as well as review and approve contracts for the Department. In addition, the attorney will help implement enforcement related to a multi-million dollar settlement reached with the vaping industry. Finally, the attorney will be responsible for HIPAA compliance for all of Erie County, with the assistance of outside counsel. The attorney will be directly supervised by the County Attorney. As the County Attorney’s office is a relatively small office, specific job duties may be altered from time to time.

Minimum Qualifications:
Graduation from an approved school of law with a J.D. Degree, admission to the New York State bar, and 6 years of practice experience with a minimum of two years experience in either health care, HIPAA compliance, or public health.
Preferred Qualifications:
At least one year experience representing public health officials and public health agencies in New York State.
Erie County Attorney's Office has a work-from-home policy that allows up to two days per week to be remote.
