Building Guard*

Starting rate: $20.18 per hour

*Provisional Appointment; a civil service test will be required in the future.

Residence Requirements:

CANDIDATES MUST HAVE BEEN LEGAL RESIDENTS OF ERIE COUNTY FOR AT LEAST ONE MONTH IMMEDIATELY PRECEDING THE DATE OF THE WRITTEN TEST AND MUST BE LEGAL RESIDENTS OF ERIE COUNTY AT THE TIME OF APPOINTMENT. There are multiple anticipated vacancies at the Erie County Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Services. 

JOB DUTIES:

The work involves guarding County buildings and property, maintaining order, coordinating lower-level staff with tasks/assignments and giving directions to visitors. Work is performed in accordance with established policy and procedure and requires the use of tact and discretion with information obtained while monitoring County buildings. The incumbent must exercise sound judgment in providing for the safety of County employees and property. Work is performed under the supervision of a higher-level security employee. Does related work as required.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:

Controls access to County buildings and property;

Maintains order and, if necessary, removes disorderly persons from County facilities;

Prevents trespass, loitering, and theft and property damage;

Protects employees and public against physical harm caused by others;

Assists visitors and clients by directing them to appropriate locations or providing non-technical information;

Inspects packages and parcels carried into or out of buildings;

Summons proper authorities to apprehend or arrest visitors suspected of committing crimes;

Checks time clocks;

Controls traffic and parking;

Utilizes state-of-the-art security equipment to monitor County buildings and property and dispatch as required;

Writes incident reports.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Candidates must have graduated from a senior high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

• A criminal background investigation will be conducted on all applicants prior to hire.
• Registration as a Security Guard by the State of New York, Department of State, Division of Licensing Services at the time of appointment.
• Possession of a valid New York State Driver's License when duties of the position necessitate.

NOTE: Verifiable part-time and/or volunteer experience will be pro-rated toward meeting full-time experience requirements.
