Compost Intern

$19.321 per hour for 24 to 40 hours per week

The Erie County Department of Environment and Planning – Environmental Compliance Services Division is actively seeking an intern for our downtown Buffalo office. The internship is expected to last up to 760 hours starting in May 2025. Salary is $19.321 per hour. Work will be focused on assisting with the Erie County compost program. The Compost Intern will work closely with the Environmental Compliance Services Division to perform entry-level tasks related to research, case study development, public engagement/outreach, graphic design, data tracking and photography, including:

  • Working as a team member on projects under direct supervision and mentorship
  • Developing case studies on successful local compost programs
  • Assisting in project promotion and volunteer recruitment
  • Creating flyers, handouts, signage, and social media posts
  • Tracking and logging data of participation at municipal sites and other appropriate metrics
  • Photograph events, pilot sites, and other project components

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Recently graduated from or currently enrolled in good academic standing in a Bachelors’ or Masters’ Degree program in the Natural Sciences, Environmental Studies, or a related field at a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university and a minimum of three (3) years of coursework completed.
  2. Minimum 3.2 GPA
  3. Must be capable of the basic operation of a Windows-based personal computer and have a basic familiarity of Microsoft Office including Word and Excel. 
  4. Must effectively communicate orally and in writing.
