SHIFT:                   9:00 AM – 5:00 PM                                     

TITLE OF POSITION:   Computer Operator*

STARTING SALARY:   $46,546 - $57,387 Annually (CSEA Job Grade 7)                              

*Please note that this position is a competitive civil service title and will require a civil service examination in the future. After the exam, selection for permanent appointment(s) will be made from reachable candidate(s) on the eligible list according to the NYS Civil Service Rule of Three.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: 

Good knowledge of modern methods, principles, and techniques of data processing and electronic computing machines; good knowledge of the procedures for preparing the system for use, including testing equipment prior to use; good knowledge of procedures for initial program loading of the system and of the related software functions; good knowledge of tape library system and the ability to identify and request tapes that are needed; good knowledge of office terminology, procedures and equipment; working knowledge of the use, operation and maintenance of computer hardware and peripheral equipment; ability to reason with a high degree of logic; ability to understand and follow detailed oral and written instructions; ability to work well with others; a high degree of accuracy, industry and dependability; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

A.) Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and 18 months of experience in the operation of a central processing multi-programming computer system; or:

B.) Completion of two (2) years of college at a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with specialization in data processing or computer science and one (1) year of data processing experience in the operation of a central processing multi-programming computer system; or

C.) Completion of high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and three (3) years of experience in data processing operations; one (1) year of which involved the operation of a central processing multi-programming computer system; or:

D.) An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of (A), (B) and (C).

NOTE:  Verifiable part-time and/or volunteer experience will be pro-rated toward meeting full time experience requirements.
