Department & Location:      Erie County District Attorney, 25 Delaware Avenue, Buffalo

Title of Position                     Confidential Discovery Liaison, Job Group IX (MC/FLSA Hourly) 

Shift:                                      1 full time Temporary 

                                                Monday-Friday 9:00am-5:00pm or 8:30am-4:30pm 

Starting Annual Salary:       $53,972 (for new county employees) $53,972-$68,203 (for current county employees

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: 

  • Maintain current knowledge of all related laws, rules, regulations, caselaw and best practices re: CPL §245 and §30.30; 
  • Coordinate with Assistant District Attorneys to collect, evaluate, synthesize, assign, monitor, review and prepare discovery disclosures for defense counsel and the courts; 
  • Manage a law enforcement disciplinary file database created in late 2021. 
  • Assist in the creation of policies and protocols that maintain compliance with discovery statutes, emerging caselaw and best practices; 
  • Prepare interoffice correspondence involving office practices, rules, regulations, policies and procedures; 
  • Work with DA Information Technology staff to evaluate and utilize efficient discovery collection and dissemination tools; 
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with Assistant District Attorneys, law enforcement agencies, laboratory personnel and defense counsel. 
  • Does related work as required. 

     

PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: 

Thorough knowledge of state laws and regulations in the area of criminal prosecutions; thorough knowledge of laws, rules, regulations, caselaw and best practices re: CPL §245 and §30.30; proficiency with legal terminology and required document formatting; incorporates legal references and includes an analysis of precedent involved in relation to the case or matter under discussion; ability to perform daily tasks with a high degree of accuracy; skill in preparing reports and analyzing data; ability to work well with others; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a diverse constituency; ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions; ability to articulate clearly and logically in writing and orally; ability to maintain strict code of confidentiality; initiative; tact; good judgment; capable of performing the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation. 

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: 

A.) Possession of an Associate’s degree in Paralegal studies and four (4) years of experience as a Paralegal/Legal Assistant, at least two (2) years of which must be in criminal law; or: 

B.) Possession of a Bachelor’s degree in Paralegal studies and two (2) years of experience as a Paralegal/Legal Assistant; at least two (2) years of which must be in criminal law; or: 

C.) Possession of a Bachelor’s degree, including 15 credit hours in Paralegal studies and four (4) years of experience as a Paralegal/Legal Assistant; at least two (2) years of which must be in criminal law; or: 

D.) Possession of a Bachelor’s degree and five (5) years of experience as a Paralegal/Legal Assistant; at least two (2) years of which must be in criminal law; or 

E.) Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered two (2) year college or university with a Associate’s degree and seven (7) years of experience as a Paralegal/Legal Assistant; at least two (2) years of which must be in criminal law; or 

F.) An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of (A), (B), (C), (D) and (E). 

NOTE 1: Graduation from an approved school of law with a J.D. Degree may be substituted for any of the above requirements. 

NOTE 2: Verifiable part-time and/or volunteer experience will be pro-rated toward meeting full time experience requirement.
