DEPARTMENT: SOCIAL SERVICES (YOUTH SERVICES)
TITLE OF POSITION: DETENTION RECREATION COORDINATOR
LOCATION: YOUTH DETENTION CENTER
SALARY: JG 8: Starting Annual Salary $52,364
The work involves planning and coordinating athletic and recreational activities for residents in the Detention facility, Department of Youth Services. The incumbent solicits residents’ participation and directs the operations of the Recreation, Music, Art and Crafts, and job readiness programs. Under direct supervision of the Deputy Commissioner of Youth Services , or designee, the incumbent monitors the activities to ensure compliance with established regulations and prepares written reports as required. In addition, the incumbent ensures an excellent standard of recreational activities for youth. Supervision may be exercised over professional and non-professional staff. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:
- Plans, organizes, and coordinates a recreation program that allows all Detention residents a chance to succeed and build a healthy self-image;
- Develops a program that allows residents to become involved in activities of their choice (team, individual, and leisure time). Also provides some social interaction with outside groups;
- Assesses the needs of individual residents and designs an appropriate recreational program;
- Supervises maintenance of recreational equipment and the request for purchase of additional equipment; trains staff in the proper and safe use of such equipment;
- Prepares and maintains daily program recreational activity reports reflecting the participants’ reaction, progress or regression;
- Makes appropriate recommendations or modifications regarding recreation programs based on observations and evaluations of activities by staff and/or residents;
- Participates in the planning and scheduling of after-school activities and groups for youth.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:
Good knowledge of modern recreation theory and practice; good knowledge of the planning and equipping of recreation facilities and areas; working knowledge of New York State Office of Children and Family Services and regulations; ability to promote, plan and organize a wide variety of recreation activities; ability to work with people of all ages; ability to express oneself clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; initiative; resourcefulness; capable of performing the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Graduation from a regionally accredited or NYS registered four (4) year college or university with a Bachelor's degree and two (2) years of experience working with at-risk youth.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Candidates must:
- Section 424-a of the Social Services Law requires the local social services district to inquire whether the applicant is the subject of an indicated child abuse or maltreatment report on file with the State Central Register of Child Abuse and Maltreatment.
- All potential employees for this position will be required to sign the necessary clearance form prior to being advised that they will be hired. Refusal to sign will be cause for an automatic non-selection.
- Subject to background investigation and fingerprinting for appointment. (Applicant may be required to submit the necessary fees for the fingerprint processing.)
- As required by law or statute, subject to medical examination including tuberculin (TB) test, at time of appointment and throughout period of employment when assigned to Youth Services.
- NOTE: Verifiable part-time and/or volunteer experience will be pro-rated toward meeting full-time experience requirements
