ENVIRONMENTAL CHEMIST 

DEPARTMENT:                                          HEALTH                                         

LOCATION:                         PUBLIC HEALTH LABORATORY; 503 KENSINGTON AVENUE   

SHIFT:                                                         8:30 AM – 4:30 PM

JOB GROUP & SALARY SCALE:              $66,277 - $84,741 Annually (CSEA JOB GROUP 12)

*Please note that this position is a competitive civil service title and will require a civil service examination in the future. After the exam, selection for permanent appointment(s) will be made from reachable candidate(s) on the eligible list according to the NYS Civil Service Rule of Three.  

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

A.) Possession of a bachelor’s degree* with 24 credits in chemistry and/or biochemistry and one (1) year of experience** in the field of chemistry, including one year of specialized experience in the field of chemistry directly related to air or water pollution, solid or hazardous waste, analysis of biological tissue for chemical contaminants or regulation or analysis of pesticides. 

B.) Possession of an associate’s degree* with 24 credits in chemistry and/or biochemistry and three (3) years of experience** in the field of chemistry, including one year of specialized experience in the field of chemistry directly related to air or water pollution, solid or hazardous waste, analysis of biological tissue for chemical contaminants or regulation or analysis of pesticides. 

C.) An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of (A) and (B).

NOTE 1: *Your degree must have been awarded by a college or university accredited by a regional, national, or specialized agency recognized as an accrediting agency by the U.S. Department of Education/U.S. Secretary of Education. If your degree was awarded by an educational institution outside the United States and its territories, you must provide independent verification of equivalency. A list of acceptable companies who provide this service can be found on the Internet at http://www.cs.ny.gov/jobseeker/degrees.cfm. You must pay the required evaluation fee 

NOTE 2: **A masters or earned doctoral degree in one of the above disciplines may be substituted for one (1) year of experience. 

NOTE 3: Verifiable part-time and/or volunteer experience will be pro-rated toward meeting full-time experience requirements.
