Crew Chief - Highways – Position #3505 *Permanent

East Concord District Mon-Fri 7am-3pm

Starting Annual Salary: $49,870  (Job Grade 11)

The Erie County Department of Public Works Highways Division is seeking an individual for work that involves supervising and coordinating the work of highway maintenance, repair and construction crews. The incumbent performs supervisory work in the Highway Division under the general supervision of the Senior Highway Maintenance Engineer and other higher-ranking departmental employees. Supervises a large number of highway maintenance and construction worker. Does related work as required.

  • Confers with Senior Highway Maintenance Engineer and receives road work assignment;
  • Instructs Crew Chief as to assignments for their crews and the work objectives;
  • Assigns priorities based on conference with the Senior Highway Maintenance Engineer and on inspection results;
  • Inspects roads within division to determine need for maintenance and repair work, snow removal, sanding and snow fencing;
  • Recommends construction work needs to engineer;
  • Inspects safety conditions at work sites, including but not limited to Underground Facilities Protection Organization (UFPO) markings, Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), advanced warning signage and equipment safety issues;
  • Prepares reports on maintenance material needs and equipment matters, utilizing appropriate technology;
  • Coordinates activities of various work crews;
  • Prepares reports on work progress, utilizing appropriate technology;
  • Investigates routine complaints from public;
  • Checks reports from foreman;
  • Inspects equipment to determine condition and need for repair or replacement;
  • Makes personnel recommendations to Senior Highway Maintenance Engineer;
  • Relieves and takes the place of the Senior Highway Maintenance Engineer in his/her regular absence.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma, eight (8) years of experience in highway and/or bridge construction and/or maintenance work, at least three (3) years of which must have been in a supervisory capacity, at least two (2) years of which must have been in the Highway Division.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT:

Possession of a valid New York State Commercial Driver's License (CDL) appropriate for Class of vehicle operated.
