Title of Position Grand Jury Stenographer*, CSEA Job Group XIV (1 position)
Shift: Regular part-time provisional, Monday-Friday (30 hours/week)
Starting Salary: $38.04/hour for new county employees; For current CSEA Erie County employees – hourly step to step compensation Grades 1-5 & A-F
• Contracted 3% cost of living increase in each of 2025, 2026 & 2027
• All stenographic machine and supplies provided
*Please note that this position is a competitive civil service title and requires a future civil service examination. Selection for permanent appointment(s) will be made from reachable candidate(s) on the eligible list according to the NYS Civil Service Rule of Three.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:
- Takes and transcribes all testimony heard by the Grand Jury utilizing a computer assisted transcribing system, proofing and finalization of transcripts, routing to appropriate bureau or local court office;
- Takes and transcribes statements of witnesses and confessions of defendants in matters to be presented to the Grand Jury;
- No audio recording/backup permitted;
- Prepares for the selection, induction and indoctrination of a new Grand Jury by the District Attorney;
- Maintains Grand Jury records, transcripts and the results of Grand Jury action, as well as statements and line-ups;
- Maintains a roster of full time reporters to cover all Grand Jury panels each month;
- Keeps current with various bureaus as to status of cases requested by departments within District Attorney's Office, local courts and judges' requests;
- Testifies on request, as to accuracy of transcripts in County and Supreme Court.
PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:
Comprehensive knowledge of legal terminology and of the proper form, contents and processing of legal documents; comprehensive knowledge of courtroom procedures; ability to operate CAT (Computer Aided Transcription) equipment; ability to take and transcribe verbatim testimony of the greatest complexity at a rate of 225 syllables a minute; ability to understand and follow detailed oral and written instructions; ability to get along with others; clerical aptitude; a high degree of accuracy; initiative and resourcefulness; industry and dependability; good hearing; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
A.) Completion of an acceptable course in Court Reporting and two (2) years of experience in general verbatim reporting using CAT (Computer Aided Transcription) equipment; or:
B.) Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and three (3) years of experience in general verbatim reporting using CAT (Computer Aided Transcription) equipment; or:
C.) An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of (A), and (B).
NOTE: Verifiable part-time and/or volunteer experience will be pro-rated toward meeting full time experience requirement.
