The work involves supervising the nursing care of patients in the Detention's health care facility. Work is performed in accordance with professional nursing standards subject to hospital regulations, and instructions from nursing and medical supervisors. General supervision is received from higher level professional nursing staff who review work through inspection, discussion of problems and analysis of reports. Direct supervision is exercised over a number of professional and non-professional assistants. Does related work as required.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:

  • Supervises patient care in a nursing unit according to established policies and standards;
  • Supervises staff nurses and aides in the care of patients; plans their work, makes assignments, gives specific instructions, and evaluates their performance;
  • Supervises the feeding of patients and environment of patients;
  • Requisitions, issues and supervises the use of supplies and equipment in the unit and maintains appropriate records;
  • Makes rounds with physicians, assists with examinations and supervises the execution and recording of the treatments, medications and recommendations; may perform advanced nursing techniques;
  • Makes periodic rounds of inspections interviewing patients and relatives to evaluate patient care, ascertain need for other services, and interpret rules for patient education;
  • Participates in departmental meetings and conferences to represent patients' needs to medical group and to the administration to improve patient care and to resolve any problems;
  • Coordinates nursing services with other departments and agencies; Confers with supervisor on progress reports, requests, nursing procedures and other related problems, May participate in the research of the unit.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:

Thorough knowledge of professional nursing techniques, principles and terminology; thorough knowledge of matera medica, diabetics, sanitation and personal hygiene; good knowledge of techniques of hospital ward administration; ability to perform more complex nursing tasks; ability to consult with physicians and to supervise specialized treatment of patients; ability to maintain records and to prepare reports; sound professional judgment; initiative and resourcefulness; industry and dependability; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

MINIMUM OUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered School of Nursing and a license to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of New York, supplemented by two years of professional nursing experience;  Or:

  1. Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with a Bachelor's degree in Nursing and a license to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of New York, supplemented by one year of professional nursing experience.

   

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT:      

Candidates must possess current C.P.R. certification.

NOTE: Verifiable part-time and/or volunteer experience will be pro-rated toward meeting full-time experience requirements.
