The work involves making field investigations in connection with the Health Department's Programs in control of communicable and chronic diseases and assists with control measures. This is a technical position requiring knowledge of investigative procedures relative to communicable and/or chronic disease patients or suspects. The incumbent may be assigned to coordinate programs in specific areas and to oversee methods used in treatment and control. Work is performed under the direct supervision of an administrative or technical employee of higher rank. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:
- Makes on the spot investigations of disease outbreaks such as smallpox, Diphtheria, viruses, measles, poliomyelitis, etc., appearing to threaten a community or a significant segment of the population;
- Investigates suspects of sufferers of chronic and/or communicable disease such as tuberculosis, diabetes, etc., and assist in setting up clinic procedures and control measures;
- Conducts interviews to establish location, dates of exposures, number of individuals and families involved to pinpoint that an epidemic, has occurred with a particular disease or virus;
- Prepares reports of findings and makes specific control recommendations;
- Assists in collecting various blood and other laboratory specimens;
- Sets up medical appointments for suspects or carriers of communicable diseases to ensure legal compliance with the Public Health Law;
- Assists clinic physicians in various procedures involved with disease control.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:
Good knowledge of techniques, practices, and procedures involved in the administration of a particular chronic and/or communicable disease control program; working knowledge of the types of diagnoses and treatment and the prevention and/or control of communicable and/or chronic diseases; investigative ability in a public health setting; ability to communicate with professional, paraprofessional and interested community groups and individuals; ability to prepare educational and promotional material; good public relations ability; sound judgment; professional ethics; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with a Bachelor's degree and one (1) year of clinical, research, investigative or public contact work in the field of preventable diseases.
NOTE: Verifiable part-time and/or volunteer experience will be pro-rated toward meeting full-time experience requirements
