Laborer – Highways – Position # 5720 – Permanent
Harlem District Mon-Fri 7am-3pm
Starting Annual Salary: $40,213 (Job Grade 3)
The Erie County Department of Public Works Highways division** is seeking an individual for work which involves performing unskilled and semi-skilled manual work in the construction and maintenance of County highways. Under the direct supervision of an employee of higher rank, the incumbent performs routine work requiring physical strength, endurance and a willingness to perform heavy work. Does related work as required.
- Assists with the loading and unloading of trucks including gravel, sand, stone, building materials, and supplies
- Assists with road building and paving such as patching of roads, spreading tar, resurfacing, shoulder leveling, laying of tile, and ditch digging;
- Performs concrete and cement duties such as building forms, concrete posts, walks and supports
- Assists with snow removal and plowing, sanding and salting of roads, erection and removal of snow fences
- Assists with general road maintenance such as cleaning and brooming of highways, picking up trash, patrolling for safety of traffic, indexing and marking of roads, cutting grass, erecting signs, trimming trees and bushes
- Assists in general motor equipment maintenance and repair, painting signs, welding and construction work
- Assists with the construction and repair of bridges and other iron work
- Operates trucks or motorized equipment, and chain saws and pavement breakers (Pneumatic drills)

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Applicants must be able to perform moderately heavy physical labor, and be able to read, write and understand the English language.
