VACANCY NOTICE

Motor Equipment Operator II – Position # 51018557- Temporary

Clarence District Mon-Fri 7am-3pm

Starting Annual Salary: $45,987 (Job grade 7)

The Erie County Department of Public Works Highways Division is seeking an individual for a position involving operating the largest and most complex self-propelled equipment such as backhoes, excavators, graders, tractor trailer and lowboy, Gradall or equivalent. Incumbents occasionally supervise a crew of laborers and others and/or perform routine repairs and maintenance on equipment. Work is performed under the direct supervision of a higher-level maintenance supervisor who makes work assignments, assigns specific pieces of equipment and provides general instructions. Does related work as required.

  • Operates one or more of the machines mentioned above for highway and bridge construction, repair and maintenance projects;
  • Performs tasks inherent to assigned machine according to instructions received from supervisor;
  • Operates a bituminous paver, rollers, self-propelled sweepers, and front-end loaders;
  • Operates all trucks to transport material crews, or equipment;
  • Operates trucks with plow, wing and spreader attachments to simultaneously plow snow and control ice;
  • Operates backhoes, excavator, grader, Gradall or equivalent, with all their attachments for general excavating, loading trucks, digging ditches and trenches and foundations and other work in connection with construction, repair and maintenance projects;
  • Operates a Vactor truck to remove dirt and debris from catch basins and drop inlets;
  • Maintains daily record of work performed and materials used;
  • Performs routine maintenance and repairs on machine, both in-the-field and in-the-shop, to insure safe and efficient operations including washing, adding or changing fluids, changing spark plugs, filters, tires and other minor equipment;
  • Pumps gas or other fuel, adds or drains water and/or antifreeze to radiator, oil to crankcase and air to tires and hydraulic fluid to reservoirs; changes oil, filters, tires, and lubricates equipment as necessary;
  • Assists mechanic and blacksmith in equipment repair;
  • May operate the lo-boy tractor-trailer unit;
  • Performs tasks and activities listed for MEO 1 and/or laborer class;
  • Makes daily friction adjustments to machine;
  • Picks up and delivers tools, requisitions, vouchers, parts, purchase orders, payrolls, etc., as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:  

Eighteen (18) months of experience in the operation of self-propelled highway equipment of which one (1) year must have involved the operation of backhoes, excavators, grader, Gradalls, or equivalent heavy operating equipment.

 

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT:  

Possession of a valid New York State Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class A.

 

NOTES: 

NYS DOT Pre-employment drug test will be required. 

A criminal background investigation will be conducted on applicants prior to hire.
