Title of Position:                Outreach Worker - Veterans Services* (Full-time permanent)

Starting Annual Salary:  $46,546 (for new employees) $46,546-$57,387 (for current county employees)

*Please note that this position is a competitive civil service title and will require a civil service examination in the future. After the exam, selection for permanent appointment(s) will be made from reachable candidate(s) on the eligible list according to the NYS Civil Service Rule of Three.

Who we are looking for:

Erie County is looking for a resourceful, dependable and hard-working individual for the position of Outreach Worker - Veterans Services within the department of Veterans Services.   As an Outreach Worker - Veterans Services, this position will involve duties relating to the needs of veterans and/or spouses and families including obtaining benefits from the Veterans Administration or any other agency or organization (government or private), and performing related public relations work. The incumbent will perform a variety of duties designed to inform and assist veterans, including visits to the V.A. Medical Center and area hospitals or the homes of veterans who are unable to come to the office. 

 What qualities are we looking for?

  • Good knowledge of Federal, State and local laws and programs relating to Veterans;
  • Good knowledge of office terminology, procedures and equipment;
  • Ability to conduct interviews and investigations and to prepare reports;
  • Ability to contact other agencies and to assist Veterans in obtaining benefits;
  • Ability to supervise office management activities;
  • Ability to get along well with others;
  • Industry; Dependability; Initiative; Resourcefulness;
  • Capable of performing the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.

What are the typical work activities?

  • Provides information on services for the veteran and refers them to appropriate community agencies, including employment and housing;
  • Attends meetings of veterans' service organizations to disseminate information or answer questions;
  • Writes letters of assistance to veterans;
  • Develops recommendations for the improvement of services for the veteran community;
  • Visits the V.A.M.C., Sheehan, ECMC and specialty care providers such as nursing homes, adult care facilities, Red Cross Blood Donor Programs, Boy Scouts, schools, etc. to offer assistance and information regarding benefits, awards, rehabilitation and scholarships;
  • Attends meetings, maintain records, prepares reports and drafts correspondence, as required;
  • Performs office clerical work as required.

Minimum qualifications:

A.) Completion of a minimum of 60 semester credit hours and three (3) years of experience providing advice and assistance to U.S. Military Veterans; or:

B.) Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma four (4) years of general business or clerical experience, at least three (3) years of which involved providing advice and assistance to U.S. Military Veterans; or:

C.) An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of (A) and (B).
