Commissioner of Probation (Probation Director)
Starting Annual Salary: $100,514.
Erie County is seeking a person for the position of Commissioner of Probation/Probation Director. This is the highest-level management position in a Group D probation department. The incumbent is responsible for planning, organizing, directing, coordinating and controlling the activities of the department in a manner which ensures the provision and maintenance of effective probation services in accordance with established laws and regulations. The work is performed under the general oversight of the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services, Office of Probation and Correctional Alternatives. The incumbent typically reports to the chief executive officer of the jurisdiction. A Probation Director (Group D) is a Peace Officer pursuant to Criminal Procedure Law Section 2.10 and may carry a firearm in the performance of his/her duties. The incumbent will perform all related duties as required.
The mission of the Erie County Probation Department is to ensure the safety of the residents of Erie County by providing community-based supervision and rehabilitation services through a multi-disciplinary approach to individuals and families involved with the justice system. Our department is responsible for preparing investigations for the Court, enforcing Court Orders, protecting the integrity of victims’ rights and working collaboratively with law enforcement agencies to reduce crime. The Erie County Probation Department also provides assistance to parents and guardians raising children who are at risk of penetrating the criminal justice system through our Family Services and Juvenile Delinquency Services Teams. Our department is dedicated to providing the highest level of professionalism, integrity and equality to all residents and non-residents of Erie County.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Graduation from a regionally accredited college or university or one accredited by the New York State Board of Regents to grant degrees, with a Bachelor’s degree or higher which included or was supplemented by thirty (30) credit hours in the social or behavioral sciences and two (2) years of experience as a Probation Director (Group C), or Deputy Probation Director (Group D), or three (3) years of experience as Probation Director (Group B), Deputy Probation Director (Group C), or Assistant Probation Director (Group D), or four (4) years of experience as a Probation Director (Group A), Deputy Probation Director (Group B) or Probation Supervisor 2/Principal Probation Officer, or equivalent experience in a position in a probation agency.
NOTE 1: Course work at the graduate degree level in social work, law, public administration, criminal justice, sociology, counseling, or related field may be substituted for work experience on a year to year basis for a maximum of one (1) year of experience.
NOTE 2: Social science includes areas of study concerned with humans living in relation to other humans in a social environment and such as anthropology, criminal justice, economics, geography, history, political science, psychology and sociology.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Possession of a valid New York State driver's license at time of appointment and maintenance throughout.
United States citizenship is also required prior to permanent appointment.
NOTE 3: Individuals whose duties and responsibilities include the use of a firearm must also complete training pursuant to Criminal Procedure Law Section 2.30(3).
