The work involves performing professional nursing duties in homes, schools, clinics and classes. Incumbents are responsible for assessing the nursing care needs of patients and families, giving skilled nursing care when necessary. Work is performed under the guidance of a Supervising Public Health Nurse and is reviewed through conferences, visits with nurses at homes, and by evaluation of activity reports. Employees of this class are responsible for supervising auxiliary public health personnel involved in the care of patients, such as Registered Nurses, Licensed Practical Nurses and other para-professionals. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:
- Provides complex professional nursing care for patients in their homes;
- Teaches nursing care to families in their homes;
- Coordinates plans for service with other professional workers concerned with individual and family health care;
- Counsels and guides individuals and families in maintaining optimum health through the utilization of diet, rehabilitation procedures, immunization and personal health care;
- Provides nursing services at health clinics and schools;
- Teaches classes, addresses groups and participates in community planning related to nursing and health;
- Participates in the conduct of surveys and studies related to health matters;
- Performs necessary office work for assigned cases, including research, records maintenance and report preparation.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:
Thorough knowledge of the principles and methods of public health nursing; good knowledge of epidemiological approach to the prevention and control of disease; good knowledge of the administrative organization of public health and other social services within the community; good knowledge and understanding of the behavior of individuals throughout the normal life span; skill in the application of nursing techniques; ability to instruct patients and staff in public health practices; ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with patients of various educational, economic and cultural backgrounds; tact; good judgment; emotional stability; initiative and resourcefulness; physically capable of performing the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.
MINIMUM OUALIFICATIONS:
Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with a Bachelor’s Degree in nursing.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENT:
Possession of a current license and registration to practice as a registered professional nurse in New York State. Possession of a New York State driver license and a car available for use.
