Distinguishing Features of the Class

The work involves supervision and operation of communications and related equipment and the maintenance of records for a Medical Emergency Radio System. The incumbent supervises and operates medical emergency twoway radio equipment to assist in the coordination of local hospital and ambulance services and the transmission of a variety of medical and emergency information to hospitals, ambulances, police, fire and others, including private individuals in emergency situations. The incumbent also dispatches ambulance calls in the City of Buffalo as part of the 9-1-1 system. This is a working supervisor position with responsibility for on-site supervision of the operation of the Emergency Services Communication Center. The work is performed under the general supervision of a higherranking administrative employee in accordance with established procedures with independent judgment required in emergency situations. Supervision is exercised over MERS Coordinators. Does related work as required.

Typical Work Activities

  • Provides supervision, training, evaluation and scheduling for MERS Coordinators;
  • Supervises operations and operates MERS radio to assist with ambulance and hospital communication, notify ambulances of accidents or disaster and alert hospitals to incoming patients;
  • Answers telephones, pages Department of Emergency Services, relays information to hospitals not on MERS;
  • Requests assistance from police and fire agencies, and provides assistance to emergency units during disasters;
  • Dispatches ambulances in the City of Buffalo as part of the County 9-1-1 System;

Minimum Qualifications

A) Completion of thirty (30) semester college credit hours (see Notes 1 and 2) and two (2) years of experience in the operation of radio-telephone dispatch equipment; or: 

B) Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and four (4) years of experience in the operation of radio-telephone dispatch equipment; or: 

C) An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of (A) and (B).

Special Requirements

Current certification as an Emergency Medical Technician (E.M.T.); and: 

Certification as an Emergency Medical Dispatcher (E.M.D.) from the National Academy of E.M.D. at time of appointment and maintenance of E.M.D. certification throughout employment; and: 

Possession of a valid Class D New York State Driver License at the time of appointment and maintenance throughout period of employment.

NOTE 1: Your degree/credits must have been awarded by a college or university accredited by a regional, national, or specialized agency recognized as an accrediting agency by the U.S. Department of Education/U.S. Secretary of Education. If your degree was awarded by an educational institution outside the United States and its territories, you must provide independent verification of equivalency. NOTE 2: Possession of a current A.E.M.T. – Paramedic Certification may be substituted for the required thirty (30) semester credit hours.

 NOTE 3: Verifiable part-time and/or volunteer experience will be pro-rated toward meeting full- time experience requirements

Remote Work Eligibility

This position is not eligible for remote work under any circumstances. The duties of this role require full-time, on-site presence.
