Title of Position: Senior Paralegal*, Job Group VII (2 positions)
Shift: 1 full time provisional*/1 full time temporary Monday-Friday 9:00am-5:00pm or 8:30am-4:30pm
Starting Annual Salary: $49,379 (for new county employees) $49,379-$60,884 (for current CSEA county employees Step 0-5, other CSEA step to step) *Salaries listed as of January 1, 2025
*Please note that this position is a competitive civil service title and will require a civil service examination in the future. After the exam, selection for permanent appointment(s) will be made from reachable candidate(s) on the eligible list according to the NYS Civil Service Rule of Three.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:
• Supervises and trains paralegal and clerical staff;
• Monitors status of files;
• Assists with preparation of rough drafts of briefs and various legal documents as assigned and prepares digests of selected decisions and opinions;
• Incorporates legal references and includes an analysis of precedents involved in relation to the case or matter under discussion;
• Searches legal reference files and other sources for information and data required by the attorney in conducting interviews and answering correspondence;
• Assembles exhibits, affidavits, legal documents, etc., for the use of attorneys in the preparation for trial of cases, and collects any additional information which is needed;
• Prepares drafts of motions and responses to motions, prepares complaints, determines status of cases and responds to inquiries;
• Maintains specialized knowledge of regulations, procedures and laws pertaining to Buffalo City Court, Family Court, County Court and Superior Court;
• Provides required information i.e. in-state and out of State Certificates of Conviction/Incarceration, program narratives, etc. necessary for court proceedings;
• Maintains contact with all arresting agencies locally, state-wide and on the federal level;
• Prepares standardized forms concerning Extradition, Prisoner Return Orders and Writs of Habeas Corpus and presents legal documents in court;
• Reviews parole notifications and informs victims of offenders incarceration status, past and present;
• Provides information to victims and families regarding convicted criminals and present prosecution;
• Prepares and follows up on summonses.
PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Good knowledge of Federal, State and local reporting systems; working knowledge of administrative law practice including, but not limited to the administrative appeals process and the interplay between the rulings and regulations of an administrative agency, Federal and State statutes and case law; ability to gather information and draft legal documents; ability to articulate clearly and logically in writing and orally; ability to work well with others; ability to maintain strict code of confidentiality; possesses initiative, tact and good judgment. Physically capable of performing the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
A.) Possession of an Associate’s degree in Paralegal studies and 18 months of experience as a Paralegal/Legal Assistant; or:
B.) Possession of a Bachelor’s degree and 18 months of experience as a Paralegal/Legal Assistant; or:
C.) Possession of a Bachelor’s degree, including 15 credit hours in Paralegal studies and 12 months of experience as a Paralegal/Legal Assistant; or:
D.) Possession of a Bachelor’s degree in paralegal studies; or:
E.) Completion of an approved Paralegal Certificate program and 18 months of experience as a Paralegal/ Legal Assistant; or:
F.) Possession of a Juris Doctorate degree; or:
G.) An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of f (A), (B), (C), (D), (E) and (F).
