Department & Location: Erie County District Attorney, 25 or 50 Delaware Avenue, Buffalo

Title of Position: Sr. Victim/Witness Case Aide, Job Group VII
Shift: Monday-Friday, 9:00am-5:00pm 
          1 full-time temporary
Starting Annual Salary: $47,942 (for new county employees) $47,942-$59,109 (for current county employees)

Exam Type: Notice of Vacancy *Please note that this position is a competitive civil service title and requires a civil service examination. Selection for permanent appointment(s) will be made from reachable candidate(s) on the eligible list according to the NYS Civil Service Rule of Three.


TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:
• Prepares victims and their families involved in felony level cases for the various court processes;
• Initial assessment of the needs of the victim and development of a service delivery plan including identification of immediate and/or long term services;
• Home/hospital/off site visits to provide direct services;
• Personal advocacy, via intervention with outside agencies on behalf of the victim, to obtain information or additional services;
• Provide referrals for counseling, shelter, emergency food, etc;
• Providing court preparation, accompaniment and support, this includes an explanation of procedures and terminology relevant to the case, courtroom tours, accompaniment to court and providing support and information, and acting as liaison between the victim, witnesses, family and legal/court personnel;
• Informing the victim, as requested, of court notification, case status information and sentencing disposition;
• Maintains contact with the victims and families during the prosecution for the pending cases;
• Provides on-going follow-up for emotional support, empathetic listening and to assess the need for additional services;
• Debriefs the victim and family at conclusion of prosecution;
• Assisting with New York State Crime Victims Board compensation application, affidavit and related documentation.


PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:
Good knowledge of the criminal justice system; good knowledge of available local resources and outside agency referrals; ability to establish and maintain successful relationships with clients; ability to understand and follow instructions; ability to communicate effectively; dependability; resourcefulness; ability to maintain records and reports; tact; good judgment; emotional maturity; physically capable of performing the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

A) Completion of 30 semester credit hours from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university majoring in Social Work or Counseling or related field and three (3) years of experience working and/or counseling in a public or private social agency; or:

B) Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and five (5) years of experience working and/or counseling in a public or private social agency; or:

C) Completion of 60 semester credit hours* majoring in Social Work or Counseling or related field and two (2) years of experience working and/or counseling in a public or private social agency; or

D) An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of (A), and (B) and (C).

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT
Possession of a valid New York State Driver’s License is required at time of appointment.
