Sign Shop Fabricator – Position #’s 51017786 & 51017787 – Permanent

Starting Annual Salary (1/1/23):  $ 44,866  (AFSCME Job Grade 7)

The Erie County Department of Public Works Highways Division is seeking two individuals for work which involves performing skilled metal fabrication and related tasks in a county sign shop. Work is performed under the direct supervision of a Sign Shop Chief. Supervision may be exercised over lower level sign shop employees. Does related work as required.

  • Performs skilled metal fabrication work in the production of highway signs;
  • Operates a variety of manual and power tools including; roller applicator, vacuum applicator, metal shears, power shears, punch press, drill press, power hacksaw, jig saw etc.;
  • Designs and lays-out job orders for highway signs;
  • Assists with maintenance of sign shop traffic. counters and equipment;
  • Cuts stencils, applies screening fabric to frames, and operates silk screen equipment;
  • Supervises unskilled personnel engaged in highway sign production;
  • Assists foreman in the maintenance of operating and safety procedures;
  • Participates in highway maintenance operations and emergency snow removal;
  • Participates in pavement working installation and maintenance operations.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:  

Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma, supplemented by a course in mechanical drawing and one (1) year of experience working in a job-order sign and metal fabricating shop.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT:

Possession of a valid New York State Commercial Driver's License (CDL) as appropriate for Class of vehicle operated.

NOTES:

Job specific skills tests may be administered prior to appointment to determine ability to perform the assigned position.

Verifiable part-time and/or volunteer experience will be pro-rated toward meeting full-time experience requirements
