This position is classified within the competitive class of the New York State Civil Service system and, as such, is subject to the examination and appointment requirements prescribed by Civil Service Law. Permanent appointment will be contingent upon success in a future civil service examination and subsequent placement on the resulting eligible list. Being reachable on the eligible list does not guarantee permanent appointment. Appointments will be made in accordance with the New York State Civil Service Law, including “Rule-of-Three”.

Distinguishing Features of the Class

This position involves supervising the work activities of Emergency Medical Technicians, Advanced Emergency Medical Technicians, Paramedics I and Paramedics II. The incumbent is primarily a supervisor but may occasionally perform Paramedic or EMT duties. This class differs from that of Paramedic II by virtue of the increased level of supervisory and administrative responsibility. General supervision is received from the Director of Ambulance Services or higher-level Emergency Medical Services staff. Direct supervision is exercised over Emergency Medical Technicians, Advanced Emergency Medical Technicians, and -Paramedic I and II employees.

Typical Work Activities

  • Supervises the work activities of Emergency Medical Technicians and Paramedics;
  • Evaluates staff performance and assesses training needs;
  • Coordinates and provides training;
  • Participates in the development, implementation, and evaluation of services;

Minimum Qualifications

A) Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered four (4) year college or university and four (4) years of experience as a paramedic; or 

B) Graduation from high school or possession of a high school general equivalency diploma and eight (8) years of experience as a Paramedic; or 

C) An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of (A) and (B).

Special Requirements

The candidate must possess NYS Department of Health EMT - Paramedic certification at the time of application and maintain such certification for the duration of employment; and 

Must successfully comply with annual skill and didactic credentialing, training and/or review as outlined by the Western Regional Medical Advisory Committee and maintain certifications for the duration of employment; and

The candidate must possess a valid CPR certification at the time of application and maintain such certification for the duration of employment; and 

The candidate must possess a valid Class D New York State Driver’s License at the time of appointment and maintain such license for the duration of employment. 

NOTE: Verifiable part-time and/or volunteer experience will be pro-rated toward meeting full-time experience requirements

Criminal Background Check

In accordance with New York State law, a criminal background check may be conducted after a conditional offer of employment has been made. A prior conviction will not automatically disqualify a candidate from employment, unless required by law or directly related to the duties of the position. Certain positions may be subject to additional background screening based on statutory or regulatory requirements.

Remote Work Eligibility

This position is not eligible for remote work under any circumstances. The duties of this role require full-time, on-site presence.
