This position is classified within the competitive class of the New York State Civil Service system and, as such, is subject to the examination and appointment requirements prescribed by Civil Service Law. Permanent appointment will be contingent upon success in a future civil service examination and subsequent placement on the resulting eligible list. Being reachable on the eligible list does not guarantee permanent appointment. Appointments will be made in accordance with the New York State Civil Service Law, including “Rule-of-Three”.
Shift: Monday through Friday 08:00AM to 4:00PM

Distinguishing Features of the Class
The work involves performing activities which include the investigation and inspection of the non-engineering aspects of environmental health control. The incumbent works closely with other environmental health workers concerning potential health problems and provides information to more senior workers. The work is performed under the direct supervision of a higher-ranking professional employee. Supervision is exercised over lower level technical and professional employees. Does related work as required.
Typical Work Activities
- Supervises, conducts, and prepares summary reports of environmental health investigations to determine compliance with Public Health Laws, New York State Sanitary Code, Erie County Sanitary Code and applicable sections of the Social Services Law and regulations;
- Supervises, conducts and prepares summary activity reports of housing-based inspections for conditions conducive to lead poisoning according to Public Health Laws, New York State Sanitary Code and Erie County Sanitary Code;
- Prepares, supervises and provides education, information and assistance to the public, including property owners, facility operators, individuals and families regarding environmental health programs;
Minimum Qualifications
A) Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered four (4) year college or university with a Bachelor’s degree, including or supplemented by 30 semester credit hours in the physical or biological sciences; completion of a one (1) year training program including a training course approved by the New York State Department of Health and four (4) years of experience as a Public Health Sanitarian, two (2) years of which were in a supervisory capacity; or
B) Seven (7) years of experience as a public health technician or sanitarian, including two (2) years of supervisory experience and completion of a training course approved by the New York State Department of Health.
Special Requirements
Candidates must possess a valid New York State Driver's License and have automotive transportation available for use at the time of appointment.

Remote Work Eligibility
This position may be eligible for one remote work day per week, subject to departmental needs and supervisory approval, after successful completion of the probationary period. Participation in remote work is not guaranteed and may be modified or revoked at any time.
