Title of Position: Technical Specialist - Communications, Job Group VII (Jan 1, 2024 - 1 position)
Shift: Provisional, Monday-Friday 8:30am-4:30pm
Starting Annual Salary: $47,942 (for new county employees) $47,942-$59,109 (for current county employees)

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: • Assists in the operation of the County's data communications network and related equipment, including installation, maintenance and repair for terminal equipment, multiplexers, data communications lines, printers, cables and other network equipment; • Provides point-of-contact services to communications center customers regarding all data communications services; • Performs the installation, maintenance, repair and replacement of communications equipment and parts; • Performs work on data communications cables, including assembly and installation of multi-pin data cables; • Assists communications staff in testing and troubleshooting communications equipment and related data lines; • Issues network software commands on the system console in support of trouble-shooting and fault isolation of communications equipment problems; • Assists in training for the communications center users; • Retrieves used parts from decommissioned equipment and maintains as supply of spares; • Assists in the maintenance of communications center records and reports; • Assists in providing off hour coverage via call-in lists, beepers or other methods, as required; • Provides information to users relating to communication center services; • Communicates with users and on-line service providers to remedy real time problems; • Performs related work as required.
PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Thorough knowledge of the operation and services of the Communications Center; thorough knowledge of the installation and maintenance techniques for the County's data communications network, including terminals, multiplexers, data sets, printers and related parts; thorough knowledge of the operation and set up of terminal equipment, communications equipment and related hardware; ability to install, adjust and maintain terminal equipment; ability to troubleshoot communications errors; ability to demonstrate simple self-maintenance and recovery techniques to users; mechanical ability; dependability; sound technical judgment; ability to speak effectively with users and vendors; tact; courtesy; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
A.) Completion of a minimum of 60 semester credit hours at a regionally accredited or New York State registered two (2) or four (4) year college and two (2) years of experience in the installation, maintenance and/or repair of communications equipment; or:
B.) Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and four (4) years of office clerical or data processing experience, at least two (2) years of which involved the installation, maintenance and/or repair of communications equipment; or;
C.) An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of (A) and (B).
NOTE: Verifiable part-time and/or volunteer experience will be pro-rated toward meeting full-time experience requirements.
