The work involves assisting the Sheriff in the direction and organization of the Department; assumes the duties of Sheriff in the absence of the Sheriff. Under direction of the Sheriff, performs administrative duties, coordinating the activities of the Civil Division, Criminal Division and Holding Center Division. This class is responsible for the preparation and administration of the Department's budget, personnel services and administrative control of operations. Supervision is exercised over Command Staff and Deputy Sheriffs, whose number is substantial, and civilian employees.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:

Develops departmental budget in cooperation with division heads and for approval of the Sheriff;

Supervises budget control and administration;

Supervises the processing of personnel and the maintenance of personnel records;

Administers purchasing procedures;

Assists in the training of Deputy Sheriffs in several divisions;

Directs the field operations of several divisions as required;

Coordinates division activities;

Acts as liaison with State, Federal and Local Law Enforcement Agencies in relation to the Sheriff's Department activities;

Assumes the position of acting Sheriff in the county in the absence of the Sheriff.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Possession of a Bachelor's Degree in police science, management, business administration or related field and ten (10) years of responsible law enforcement experience in an administrative and managerial capacity.
