 TITLE OF POSITION:             YOUTH DETENTION WORKER (HELP PROGRAM)

LOCATION:                                  YOUTH DETENTION - 810 E. FERRY ST, BUFFALO

SHIFT:                                         VARIOUS

SALARY:                              $21.502 HOURLY

 

*An eligible list will be used to fill future vacancies after the temporary Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement (HELP) Program expires.  Please note that this position is a competitive civil service title and required a civil service examination that was held on June 1, 2024. After the exam, selection for permanent appointment(s) will be made from reachable candidate(s) on the eligible list according to the NYS Civil Service Rule of Three. 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: 

A.) Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and two (2) years of experience working with youths* or providing direct care in a public or private institution; or:

B.) Possession of an Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree,** or:

C.) An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits (A), and (B).

*Youths – Persons who have reached their seventh birthday but have not yet reached their twenty-first birthday.

 

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT:

  • Section 424-a of the Social Services Law requires the local social services district to inquire whether the applicant is the subject of an indicated child abuse or maltreatment report on file with the State Central Register of Child Abuse and Maltreatment. 
  • All potential employees for this position will be required to sign the necessary clearance form prior to being advised that they will be hired.  Refusal to sign will be cause for an automatic non-selection. 
  • Subject to background investigation and fingerprinting for appointment.  (Applicant may be required to submit the necessary fees for the fingerprint processing.) 
  • As required by law or statute, subject to medical examination including tuberculin (TB) test, at time of appointment and throughout period of employment when assigned to Youth Services. 

NOTE 1: *Per resolution (see L-2023-338 Item #1.6) presented to State Civil Service Commission on January 17, 2024, action approved and filed with the Department of State on January 24, 2024, under the Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement (HELP) Program this title is temporarily re-assigned to NON-COMPETITIVE Classification.

NOTE 2: **Your degree must have been awarded by a college or university accredited by a regional, national, or specialized agency recognized as an accrediting agency by the U.S. Department of Education/U.S. Secretary of Education. If your degree was awarded by an educational institution outside the United States and its territories, you must provide independent verification of equivalency. A list of acceptable companies who provide this service can be found on the Internet at http://www.cs.ny.gov/jobseeker/degrees.cfm. You must pay the required evaluation fee.

NOTE 3:  Verifiable part-time and/or volunteer experience will be pro-rated toward meeting full-time experience requirements.
