What Is a Harmful Algae Bloom (HAB)?
Harmful Algae Blooms (HABs) are caused by colonies of blue-green algae that grow out of control on the surface of water. Blue-green algae, also called cyanobacteria, are tiny organisms that can create thick layers in water, on rocks, and on shorelines. These blue-green algae can produce toxins that can make people, pets, and livestock very ill. These toxins can remain in the water after the bloom occurs.
What Are the Signs of a Harmful Algae Bloom?
- Strongly colored water (blue-green, green, yellow, white, brown, purple, or red)
- Paint-like appearance
- Floating mats or scums
How Can I Stay Safe From Harmful Algae Blooms?
- Stay out of discolored, scummy, or smelly water
- Check for and follow swimming, fishing, and shellfish advisories
- Do not drink, prepare food, cook or make ice with untreated surface water
- Keep pets and livestock away from bodies of water that have or may have HABs
