This video is from Erie County’s University Express program and answers the important question: “so… what happens after you flush?” Hopefully all will gain a better appreciation of why sewer systems are critical for the protection of public health, the protection of the environment, and supporting our economy.
The DSM also offers tours of the wastewater treatment plants for schools, community, and neighborhood groups.
Participants will learn about the biological process used to clean sewage water and prepare it for release back into Lake Erie. Tours may include a preliminary overview highlighting the various phases of wastewater treatment as well as a walking tour of the facility.
Tours must be pre-arranged and at least two-weeks advanced scheduling is required. Please note, tour dates and times may vary based on staff availability.
For your safety and enjoyment, please be aware of the following guidelines:
- All participants must be at least 10 years old, and an appropriate number of chaperones are required for any visitors younger than 18 years of age;
- Wastewater tours can accommodate up to 20 individuals maximum;
- Participants must wear closed-toe, closed-heel footwear with sufficient traction;
- Tour guests should dress appropriately for the weather and this type of industrial facility, as a portion of the tour is outdoors (weather-permitting);
- Tour participants will be provided the proper PPE (head and eye protection) to be worn during their time at the facility. Guests may bring their own PPE if they have it available;
- Groups should expect to be on site for 1-2 hours;
- The facility tour involves approximately one-mile of walking on a variety of surfaces, including walking up and down narrow stairways.
- Restrooms are available at the beginning and the end of the tour only;
- No smoking or eating during the tour;
- Tours may be ended for any reason. Safety is our first priority.
