Long-acting Reversible Contraception

Long-Acting Reversible Contraception (LARC) options are safe, effective and low-maintenance pregnancy prevention methods.

LARC includes intrauterine devices (IUDs) and implants that are highly effective at preventing pregnancy. Implants can provide pregnancy protection up to 5 years. IUDs can prevent pregnancy up to 12 years, depending on the type. However, both options can be removed whenever the patient desires and their contraception effects are completely reversible, meaning women return to their normal fertility level shortly after removal.

“Birth control options available now are safe, affordable and flexible, and LARC methods offer long-term protection that many people find convenient and reliable,” said Commissioner of Health Dr. Gale R. Burstein. “We want people to know they can come to the Erie County Family Planning Center and receive confidential, respectful care, and our providers work with each patient to find a birth control method that works for them and their needs.”

Preventive care like contraception and reproductive health services help reduce unintended pregnancies, reduce the risk of sexually transmitted infections, and improve maternal and infant health outcomes.
