Erie County Sewer District No. 3 has commenced a major expansion of the Southtowns Advanced Wastewater Treatment Facility (AWTF).  The below summary and technical documents provide an overview of this multi-phase construction project – estimated to approach $200 million – that will continue Erie County’s commitment to protecting public health, protecting the environment, and supporting the needs of the local community for decades to come.

Construction for the first phase of the project was completed in Summer 2026, at a total cost of approximately $60 million. Phase 2 of the Southtowns AWTF Expansion Project has been designed and is scheduled to be advertised for construction bids in September 2026.
