PrEP and PEP services are offered at the Erie County Sexual Health Center.
HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) can affect anyone regardless of sexual orientation, race, ethnicity, gender, age, or where they live.
Certain groups of people in the United States are more likely to get HIV than others.

What is PrEP?
- PrEP (Pre-exposure Prophylaxis) is a safe and effective medication that can greatly reduce your risk of HIV infection.
- PrEP can be either pills or shots (injections)
What is PEP?
- PEP (Post-Exposure Prophylaxis) means taking a medicine to prevent HIV after possible exposure. PEP must be started within 72 hours of a potential exposure to HIV.
Paying for PrEP
In NYS, PrEP is covered by Medicaid and most health insurance plans with minimal/no payment for medicine, lab work, or clinic visits.
If you are uninsured or underinsured, you may qualify for PrEP assistance through PrEP-AP, operated through the NYS Department of Health.
