Have you seen a post for an upcoming event? One that looks like you want to participate? Before you go ahead and register, make sure the offer advertised is legitimate. Do your due diligence and conduct a little research before you sign up.
Things to be aware of and red flags to watch for:
- Items making the sign-up appear urgent "act quickly" or "do not delay"
- Can you verify the event elsewhere?
- Who is advertising the event? Where is that person located?
- Are there other ways to register?
- How can you pay for the event?
- What is the cost, and what does that cost include?
- Is there a cancellation policy or rain date?
- Are there any grammar and spelling mistakes?
If payment for the event is through an app like Venmo or PayPal, who are you instructed to pay? Is it the person posting the event or someone else? One should recall that using the Friends/Family payment option in both apps should only be used for people you know. Refer to the app's terms and conditions to ensure appropriate use.
Once you have done your research, if you remain unsure if the event is a legitimate vendor event, avoid paying for a spot or signing up until you are sure the event is authentic. Feel free to reach out to our office at 716-858-6169 for further assistance.
