There are two groups of staff within the Bureau of Weights and Measures who work together to ensure market equity – Deputy County Sealers and Scanner Accuracy Examiners. Here are some of the tasks that a Deputy County Sealer may be seen out in the community doing:
- Inspects a diverse variety of devices:
- Pharmacy scales and weights (using weights as small as .001grams)
- Jewelry scales (using weights as small as 1 carat (.002grams))
- Deli Scales
- Register scales at a checkout
- Supermarket prepackaging scales
- Shipping platform scales (UPS stores etc.)
- Propane scales
- Forklift scales at warehouses
- Livestock scales
- Aggregate hopper scales (for blacktop plants)
- Vehicle scales (weigh trucks up to 120,000 lbs.)
- Waterfront grain elevator scales (weigh grain up to 150,000 lbs.)
- Calibrates:
- Calibrates farmers' milk tanks
- Checks the net contents of packaged goods for accuracy
- Checks the safety and accuracy of gasoline pumps
- Collects samples of gasoline for testing octane and other quality issues
- Checks the accuracy of home heating fuel delivery truck meters
- Investigates consumer complaints
- Conducts package checks to ensure packages contain the proper weight displayed on the package.
