Governor Hochul Urges Recipients of Government Assistance to Protect Themselves Against Card Skimming

Scammers are out in full force, now going after some of the most vulnerable individuals who receive SNAP and cash benefits.

Be vigilant!

Inspect any device before you go to scan your card. Look for anything unusual, markings, glue, or tape. Give the terminal device a gentle lift up, does any part of it come loose? Gently pulling up on the device will  ensure an overlay has not been placed over the terminal to skim the data from your card and PIN. Does something appear out of the ordinary with the machine? If so, do not swipe your card, notify a store manager and contact your local Erie County Department of Social Services.

New York State Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance offers the following additional steps you can take to protect your benefits:

Shield the PIN pad before entering your PIN.

Change your PIN frequently (consider changing it after each purchase).

Check your EBT or cash benefit account often for unauthorized charges.

If you think your EBT benefits were stolen, immediately contact the EBT Customer Service Helpline, 1-888-2328-6399, www.ConnectEBT.com, to request a new card and contact the local Erie County Department of Social Services to alert them of the theft of your benefits.

The Governor’s Press Release advises:

Anyone who believes their benefits have been stolen should contact the EBT Customer Services Helpline at 1-888-328-6399 or go to ConnectEBT.com, and report it so they can get a new card. Suspected victims should also contact their local department of social services to report that their benefits have been stolen and file a police report with their local police department.
