***IMPORTANT NOTICE***

Be Aware of Foreclosure Scams

Unfortunately, scammers often target property owners involved in foreclosure proceedings. If you receive an unexpected phone call, email, text message, or letter claiming to be from the County of Erie, use caution before providing any personal or financial information.

The County of Erie and/or its attorneys will never ask you for:

  • Payment by gift card, prepaid debit card, cryptocurrency, or wire transfer.
  • Your online banking username, password, PIN, or other account login credentials.
  • Fees paid to a third party claiming they can guarantee foreclosure relief.
  • Sensitive personal (i.e., your Social Security Number) or financial information through an unsolicited phone call, text message, or email.

If you are unsure whether a communication is legitimate, do not send money or provide personal information. Contact Erie County Real Property Tax Services at (716) 858-8333.

Qualified free foreclosure help is available; watch out for companies or people who charge a fee for these services. You can call the New York State Office of the Attorney General's Homeowner Protection Program (HOPP) toll-free consumer hotline to be connected to free housing counseling or legal services at 1-855-HOME-456 (1-855-466-3456), or visit their website at https://homeownerhelpny.org/. A statewide listing by county is also available at the website of the New York State Department of Financial Services:

https://www.dfs.ny.gov/consumers/help_for_homeowners/new_york_state_non-profit_housing_counseling_agencies.

If you believe you have been the victim of a scam, report it to your local law enforcement agency and the appropriate consumer protection authorities.
