Administration of Opioid Antagonist in School
Schools/Districts should read the Opioid Guidance for a complete explanation of the options and requirements.
District boards of education and school governing bodies should develop policies consistent with the laws and regulations of New York State prior to participation in an opioid overdose prevention program and providing an opioid antagonist in a school.
Note: Education Law permits NYS school districts, boards of cooperative educational services, county vocational education and extension boards, charter schools, and non-public schools to participate in NYSDOH opioid overdose prevention programs.

* RNs can only administer an opioid antagonist pursuant to a valid non-patient specific order meeting the requirements in NYS Nursing: Laws, Rules & Regulations: Part 64 (nysed.gov), issued by a NYS licensed physician or NP. An RN may assign trained Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) to administer under direction of the on-site RN, or the LPN may be trained to administer as a school personnel under the school's/district's OOPP.
