HIV Prevention and Counseling

Anyone can get HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus). It is important to protect yourself and know your status. At the Erie County Family Planning Center, you can be tested for HIV and receive counseling on how to prevent being exposed or exposing others. You can also receive a prescription for PrEP or PEP.

What is PrEP?

PrEP - or pre-exposure prophylaxis - is a medication taken every day to reduce your risk of getting HIV. If you are at a higher risk for HIV, you should take prep.

What is PEP?

PEP, or post-exposure prophylaxis, is a medication you take if you think you have been exposed to HIV and are not taking prep. PEP must be taken within 3 days after being exposed. It will reduce your chance of getting HIV.
