About
Age Friendly Erie County (AFEC) is a collaborative network of organizations in Western New York committed to creating a vibrant, inclusive community for our uniquely diverse residents to age with purpose, opportunity, support, and dignity.
Age Friendly Erie County envisions a future where all older adults in Western New York have optimal access to community mobility, health care, housing, and civic engagement opportunities that enable meaningful social participation and maximize their quality of life. AFEC’s hope is that Western New York will be a model community in New York State and nationally where older adults and their families thrive. Erie County will also participate in efforts to achieve the vision that New York State will become the first Age Friendly State in the United States.
History
In September 2014, AARP recognized Erie County’s commitment to becoming an “Age-Friendly Community”, part of a nationwide initiative focused on community improvements that benefit older adults and all generations of residents. Joining AARP’s Network of Age Friendly Communities will provide Erie County with a framework to establish new community partnership, pursue future funding opportunities, and share information and best practices with other communities that have made similar commitments to creating more age-friendly spaces for their residents.
Since enrolling in the AARP Network of Age-Friendly Communities, Erie County will spend the next two years developing an action plan to identify issues influencing the health and quality of life of older adults and residents of all ages. Representatives from over 90 local organizations participated in the Age Friendly Erie County Needs Assessment Workshop in February 2015 to kick off planning efforts.
